  9. I am having a very confusing problem with my Mac Plus hard crashing after a
  10. Tabby poll.  Everything goes along fine until Hermes is booted by Tabby.
  11. The 'About Hermes' box appears as it should.  At that point I get a full
  12. blown crash - complete with screaming noises, intermittent motorboat sounds
  13. and squiggly lines on the monitor.  If I push the reset button, the Mac Plus
  14. reboots to Hermes, the messages are imported, and all is well 'til the next
  15. Tabby call.
  16.    
  17. The problem is bearable if I crash the BBS I am polling during the day, but
  18. at 4 or 5 AM it is really a problem.  I really have exhausted all the normal
  19. techniques that I know to solve the problem.  I have replaced all the
  20. programs with fresh copies and stripped all the cDevs, INITs, and externals
  21. and nothing has helped.  I have done everything except go back to Hermes 1.6
  22. I have FragFighter set to run between DeliverMail and Hermes.
  23.    
  24. I have considered going back to Hermes 1.6 but don't really think that
  25. Hermes is the problem.  I am not sure what problems I would have trying to
  26. go back.

  79. sizes down for that point guy who calls in only once a week on noisy lines.
  80. I got me one of them, and he often cuts out in the middle or towards the tail

  107. time to dig out Tom Konantz's TSX program...

  202. I just got a copy if Epistle. When I try to configure it. I get a dialog box
  203. with "unable to open printer....." then the next screen comes up with art, then
  204. the system freezes.
  205. I am using a standard Mac II with system 6.0.7

  221. Yes, I can recommend the Promodem ULTIMA if you use it for your business or
  222. general telecommunications. It cost me $650 at "MAYA" and I get V.32, MNP 2-5,
  223. V.42
  224. and V.42bis -- PLUS a 9600 Fax modem, capable of sending fine resolution and
  225. 16grey's. 
  226.   
  227. If you want to primarily use it for Tabby -- I don't know if I should recommend
  228. it. It seems that most BBS and Nodes who use high speed modems use either HST
  229. or
  230. Telebit modems, which are mostly not V.32 compatible. So you can squeeze only
  231. 2400 bps performance out of such connections. Also the minimum baud rate is
  232. 1200. 
  233.   
  234. The other thing is I have not been able to take advantage of MNP-4 or -5 nor
  235. of any V.42 or V.42bis while using Tabby. -- I can't figure out why?? 
  236.   
  237. Perhaps it has something to do with Tabby and this modem. It seems like Tabby
  238. is hostile to the Ultimas' CONNECT messages. With MNP or V.42 the Ultima sends
  239. a 
  240. "CONNECT 2400EC" message. Although you can disable "EC-messages", I had not
  241. yet succeded in reaching higher speed than 240 cps using Tabby.
  242.   
  243. I will see what Tabby 3.0 has in store, and keep figuring out a different modem
  244. init. string for Tabby.

  284. now? Michael has not replied (Iguess he is very busy with Tabby3.0) but,
  285. just ion case there was a glitch in echomail, I wonder if it got out.

  322. changes. It is something on my end. I'm going to try the suggestions in
  323. another message and set s27 to 128 and s34 to 3. Will post results later.

  392. I have been trying to locate a relable feed for the HERMES and/or HERMES_SYSOP
  393. echos, so I can divert traffic appropriately, but haven't located a feed that
  394. is linked up to the Hermes support systems ( I guess I would call Dan Brown
  395. on 110/430 and Brian Kay on 143/38 "Hermes support systems").
  396.   
  397. I suspect those echos are split and disaggregated, without a common flow.

  498. Well, first I've been reading off and on that people can't get Tabby to Port
  499. Lock at 19,200. Well, I think, I'm not sure, I think that it can. As I have
  500. the Port locked box checked and and 19,200 selected. If you all remember I had
  501. posted questions about setting tabby up with a dual standard, I didn't get many
  502. replies. I wen't out and did my homework and got some help from Pat Plummer
  503. (as far as getting the BBS set up with the HST).
  504. I then got it running with Tabby and not locked and at 9600. I then last week,
  505. read a message about the port locking and decided to give it a try. Oh, yes
  506. I also posted some speeds I was getting a while back, thinking that I was doing
  507. good, but had my bubble busted, as the speed was high because the file was
  508. small.
  509. I will post again the reuslts of last nights transfers, which are becoming
  510. average
  511. since I locked it up.

  634. Latest version of Macsbug is 6.2 (official) there is a 6.2.1 floating
  635. around that may eventually be released. Works fine here under 7.0.

  653. It is interesting that the file format (ARC or ZIP) would have an affect on
  654. thruput or reported thruput anyway, the question is are you really saving
  655. anytime over and above the actual space savings that I assume ZIP provides?

  671. will not delete files that are sent as file attaches. When you placed the
  672. filenames into your sendmail file, it treated it as as mail file which gets

  687. work... I really didn't expect it to work anyway, so I guess I shouldn't have
  688. put the NOECHO line in anyway.... it was the first message  of an area which
  689. I needed to write to correctly setup my Tabby area on our BBS.

  749. have finally convinced me to buy a USR HST DS modem.

  753. call before the modem dials the phone....

  910. If you are going to construct you rown cable, heres some tips ...
  911.   
  912. Soldering the Mac Din 8: 
  913. Remove the pins from the plastic housing by gently pushing back into the
  914. connector
  915. the side where the numbers should be marked, or is covered by the housing, they
  916. should slide out easily after a bit of firm but careful pressure. Then solder
  917. the wires to the pins. The most common mistakes are soldering to the wrong pins,
  918. then unsoldering to correct the mistake, or putting to much solder and
  919. connecting
  920. more than one pin. As a result, the plastic housing gets ssoft and looses shape
  921. or even melts and the plug is useless. Once you have soldered all the wires
  922. to the pins, let them cool. Then you can easily slide them back into the proper
  923. places. (Don't forget to put the housing on the cable the right way BEFORE you
  924. start working)
  925.   
  926. Soldering the DB-25:
  927. On some of these connectors you can use the same method, on some you cant. These
  928. however can stand a bit more heat, but it is always good practice to be careful
  929. and not apply excessive heat. In addition, if your using more tan a 25 watt
  930. pencil type iron,  your gonna be in trouble. Remember to tin your leads and
  931. iron and keep the tip clean.
  932.

  935. Jason Fried, and Bob Tudor,from whom I got various bits and pieces of info in
  936. my research, of which I would have never gotten my modem to work. Or been able
  937. to but this info together. (I hope I'm not banished for posting such a big file
  938. and being longwinded). I might also add that with these sttings and the modem
  939. configuration and dated ROMS, I have had no problems connecting with any modems,
  940. nor have anyhad any trouble connecting with my system (at least not yet).

  1266. oh, well, but you said you traced the cause back to the Generic Export file.
  1267. Anyway, the Generic file apparently was plagued with balcnk seen by lines,

  1269. this could be happening to you as well. I put Clean-By in the system and all
  1270. is working fine wwith that problem......

  1292. trouble sustaining a connect long enough to get a good transfer let alone get
  1293. rates greater than 700cps (usually 450-650) and I'm getting a drop of carrier
  1294. with an error message like:

  1303. Then Tabby will attempt to call again but there will be nothing to pick up and
  1304. carrier will be dropped. And THAT'S only if it gets this far with out having
  1305. so many errors that the transfer is aborted. Aargh...if anyone can help or has
  1306. suggestions, I'm all ears. Never had the problem with the old NEC with a similar
  1307. setup (and he helped set up the new NEC's system!). I have a IIsi, HST DS with
  1308. v32b, and Tabby 2.2 (9600 nonlocked).   Pat

  1565. a USR DS HST. I would imagine that they are. I get these speeds when connecting
  1566. to Ralph Merritt's board (269/111) and Robert WIlliams' board (278/3).
  1567. I have posted complete info on my set-up for all that are interested in it.
  1568. Let me know if you find any errors or a more efficient wayto do things with

  1926. the discrepancy in your results and mine are debatable, but since you
  1927. "program telecom software (professionaly), am a registered Apple Partner"
  1928. this can either make it so that your software is not reporting correct
  1929. results for whatever reason, or you want to make it appear that your
  1930. getting better results than anyone else due to your programming.. Not that
  1931. I think you would really do that, but I know that some telecomm programs
  1932. inflate the results to make them look better until you get into the details
  1933. of actual comparisons..

  1998. Unknown mail section (#255).  It WORKS okay, but in Tabby Log, it show the 
  1999. messages delivered to a section name that is garbage and takes up two
  2000. lines ending with "#255".  I've checked the message section and the name
  2001. is okay there.  From what I see, it looks like it's reading past the end
  2002. of the Messages file when getting the name, since there is some
  2003. intelligible data in what it's showing as the section name.

  2019. You can reduce the ram cache assuming you are using one, and you can reduce
  2020. the number of INIT's you are using. If you are using 7.0, the memory being
  2021. used that you mention is about right, since the Finder is adding 295K to
  2022. that bar in the About this Macintosh. Along with a default ram cache of
  2023. 128K.

  2237.    I've found that Tabby does things slightly the opposite of what you'd
  2238. expect.  When you create an event, all of the days are considered checked. 
  2239. So
  2240. if you only want it to run on Wednesday, you'd have to check all of the OTHER
  2241. days, click on add, and then go back to check to make sure its the way you want
  2242. it.  
  2243.   
  2244.    Until I did this for each of my events, none of the days had X's in them.
  2245.   
  2246. Once I did do that, then all of the days had X's in them.  It's made things
  2247. much easier on me when I try to change things.  :-)  
  2248.   
  2249.    Of course, by now, you've probably had tons of responses, and/or have solved
  2250. it on your own.  :)

  2279.    If Tabby won't run FSP (whatever that is), and TPort won't let you run it
  2280. only once a week, you might give QuicKeys a shot at it.

  2282.    QuicKeys v2.01 (and I assume the new version for System 7 that should be
  2283. shipping) will allow you to write a sequence that you can put a timer on so
  2284. that it will run at the time and date that you desire.  It can be setup to run
  2285. hourly, daily, weekly, yearly, or just at some future time that you want it
  2286. to.
  2287.   
  2288.    You'd have to make sure that the sequence will quit out of the other
  2289. applications you have running (at least it sounds to me as if this would be
  2290. desired) and when its finished, launch the application(s) you want running
  2291. again.  
  2292.    From the add CESoftware sent me, it appears that the new QuicKeys will wait
  2293. for a designated event before initiating the next part of the sequence, so you
  2294. should be able to use that, if you can't find anything else that will work for
  2295. you.

  2332. there is another file Tabby thinks is on hold for it that it isn't

  2349. and Tabby talking about this problem. When it was happening to him, he found
  2350. that it was due to the password key for version 1.6.1 (I think that was the
  2351. version he was running). He said that if you copied the password from Olympus
  2352. that there might be a return character at the end that fouled the system if
  2353. all you did was paste in the number to 1.6.1. He said he typed it in (I
  2354. think...)
  2355. manually and then on had no problems. I will be feeding Tabby to him as of
  2356. tomorrow

  2682. good point, as there has been some problems with super-grunged echomail floating
  2683. about in some of the Fidonet conferences.

  2780. problem but a Hermes problem that was introduced with Hermes 1.6x versions.

  2782. Hermes 1.6.2b3 is being beta tested and should solve this problem.  In the
  2783. meantime, I would recommend that you replace HERMES in your EVENTS string with
  2784.   
  2785. GYPROCK.  Gyprock will reboot your Mac, so just set Hermes as the startup
  2786. application.  I have had the same problem as you, and Gyprock certainly fixes
  2787. it.

  3097. and am running cache at 16k. This leaves me with a system file at 942k. You

  3120. although you can get aroound it and run up to 999. So, I set it up for 250 and

  3219. After checking my Tabby log, I think that in my case (Mac Plus), I'd be better
  3220. off getting an acellerator or a faster Mac to run the BBS than getting a faster
  3221. modem.  The computer spends much more time processing the traffic than it does
  3222. in connect time.  Perhaps when Tabby 3.0 (which is supposed to work two or three
  3223. times faster than 2.2) is out, that will change the ratio sufficiently to make
  3224. me change my mind.

  3310. I have been having trouble, essentially ever since I upgraded to 7.0, and the
  3311. latest is that scheduled events do not complete.  For example, the last two
  3312. days, Tabby runs export, news, mail, compress, and Tabby OK, polls fine and
  3313. the QUITS and returns to the BBS.  It does not run the rest of the applications
  3314. in the event chain.  Any suggestions?  This is very frustrating!

  3468.    I run Hermes 1.61 on a Mac II with 8 meg, 80 meg HD, and System 6.05. I also
  3469. had problems like what you mentioned.
  3470.    It seems that Hermes boots up, show the dialog, then checks the serial port
  3471. for the modem. Because the status line is not set up yet. Anyway It either locks
  3472. up, Tight, debugger button doesn't even work!, or the system get crazy. This
  3473. also happened with Hermes 1.6. 
  3474.    I replace Hermes with a brand new copy, straight from the archived original.
  3475.    That fixed everything up and it's been A-OK for about a week, week and a
  3476. half now. If this doesn't work I suggest you revert to V1.5.

  3732. Hello, Pat!  Glad to help... he should leave EMSI *on* for you.  There are some
  3733. other settings, so if he has problems with you, we can chat then.
  3734.   
  3735. However, there is more to it than configuring FD... there are FOSSILs (I use
  3736. X00.SYS v1.24), modem settings (I use a HST DS), use of RAM caches, etc.  The
  3737. trick is to find the right combo... :)
